blooming on the battlefield

The sounds of it clashing are ringing in her ears. The flashes nearly blind her. She has it in her hand, unyielding, unmoving, but so easy. So easy for her to use, to wield, to battle. It surrounds her body, cold, but comfortable. Familiar. A second skin. It comforted her to have it on her person.

Her enemy was in shadow, a simple figure made of black. No matter. An enemy was an enemy, and should be defeated, even at the cost of her own life. She stepped forward, striking, clashing her sword against the other's, making a sound that could wake even heaven. She lashed out again and again, driving the shadow figure back with all her might.

But the enemy was strong. It would not yield. Even as she forced it to step back, she felt as if it was only allowing her to do so, as if her effort meant nothing to it but a mere form of entertainment. She would not stand for this insult. No.

She pushed forward, striking with all her might. But as her sword connects, it shatters into pieces and falls to the ground. Her armor follows suit, breaking and scattering at her feet, leaving her naked and exposed.

The shadow laughed. She frowned.

"I will not lose to you again," she whispered under her breath. She palmed one of the cold steel pieces, and felt it grow hot and alive against her skin.
